Up to Jerome...literally!

After leaving Tuzigoot National Monument, we headed up to Jerome...literally.  Once known as the wickedest town in the west, the historic copper mining town of Jerome overlooks the Verde Valley from it's 5,200 foot high perch atop Cleopatra Hill.  Jerome sits above what was the largest copper mine in Arizona and produced an astonishing 3 million pounds of copper per month at it's peak.  Today the mines are silent, and Jerome has become known as the largest ghost town in America, kept alive by a vibrant and busy tourist trade.

The climb up US 89A to Jerome is not as intimidating as some, but it's steep with enough sheer drop offs and tight spots to set Sheila's legs to twitching.  To keep her mind off of the spooky drop offs on the other side of the guard rail, she concentrated on taking a video of the drive up to Jerome.

It's a long way down!! Climbing up to Jerome, AZ.
We took several pictures in Jerome, however, due to technical difficulties beyond our understanding, we lost many of them.  Here are a few of the pictures we took that weren't lost.

Below Main Street, as you enter Diaz Street is the Cribs District, more affectionately called "Husband’s Alley” during its heydays.  During Jerome's more decadent times, brothels and bordellos could be found here.

Today, Main Street is home to more family and tourist friendly establishments, such as the Nellie Bly Kaleidoscope store, the largest brick & mortar kaleidoscope store in the world.  http://www.nellieblyscopes.com/

While in the store we experimented with taking self portraits as seem thru a kaleidoscope.  Can you see our faces?  You may need to enlarge the picture.

Unfortunately, this is the extent of our pictures while in Jerome.  For more information, and pictures, about Jerome, AZ, please visit this website.  http://www.azjerome.com/jerome/
